Our friends at Detroit PAL have this weekly series History Speaks for students in grades 7-12. The 5-week session runs through Black History Month. Every Thursday from 5-7 p.m., the group will dive into the lives and contributions of prominent Black historical figures. This is your chance to learn about the trailblazers of the past and the changemakers of today who have helped elevate the status quo. Click here for details. The Henry Ford will host Black History Month celebrations every week. Search their site for details for events, including:
- Feb. 17 — Black Power Mixtape 1967-1975
- Feb. 18 — McClenon & Mann
- Feb. 25 — The Will Cyprian Trio
And be sure to stop by and see the public bus (pictured above) on which Ms. Rosa Parks took a remarkable and historic journey. When Ms. Parks refused to give up her seat to a white rider, she helped speed the Civil Rights movement that changed the United States of America. The bus is now part of the permanent collection at The Henry Ford.

This 8th annual expo features book discussions, kids’ activities, meet-and-greets with Black authors and more. The Detroit Book City African American Family Book Expo takes place Saturday, Feb. 17 at Historic People’s Community Church, 8601 Woodward Avenue Detroit, MI 48202, from 12:30 to 5 p.m. And the first 100 adults receive a free DBC calendar.
